By BRENDAN MCGAIR Sports writer WOONSOCKET – There are some things that Central Falls head coach Bobby Marchand is sure of as the regular season winds down. Marchand knows for certain his Warriors are a playoff participant and still possess a ray of hope to catch Cumberland High for top honors in Division I-North. The grey matter includes whether Central Falls will be home for the opening round of the D-I tournament, which is slated to begin next week. Marchand & Co. took a giant step in the right direction Monday afternoon, holding off a gritty Mount St. Charles squad, 4-3.
“It looks like us and Bishop Hendricken are dealing,” said Marchand, gazing into his crystal ball. “We’re in the No. 8 versus 9 game, it’s just a matter that if we can finish eighth, we can have home field advantage. That’s what we’re playing for.” Warriors freshman Kelvin Castillo continues to turn heads and earn respect. His latest effort was a goal and three assists. Though it was “Senior Day” for MSC, the underclassmen dominated the picture, led by sophomore Nick Arnold (two goals) and junior Tim Coffey (goal and an assist). Nothing has changed in terms of the division race, which still has the Warriors (7-5-5) trailing the Clippers by two points (28-26). The Mounties drop to 2-11-4, though it should be noted MSC knocked off CF earlier this season. “We know we can’t rely on anyone else,” said Marchand, a MSC alum. “Cumberland has a nice team.” CF enjoyed a 3-1 lead at intermission on the strength of goals from Olavo Montiero, Sebastian Godoy and Castillo. Then came the second half, which saw the young Mounties confidently assert themselves. Arnold found the back of the net four minutes in to trim the deficit to a goal. CF’s two-goal cushion was restored when Castillo found sophomore Victor Parra, who tucked the ball into the left corner. Arnold and the Mounties responded six minutes later, making it once again a one goal hole for the home team. Parra could have easily added to his goal total as he found himself breaking toward the net by his lonesome on two occasions. Each time, however, MSC netminder Eric Mozynski came out to challenge and eventually thwart Parra. “Victor is usually deadly from that close,” said Marchand. “(MSC) had us offside many a time, but once we started beating it, we couldn’t cash in.” “Eric has saved us many games,” complimented MSC head coach Miles Henderson. “He’s got a lot of talent. I think his total saves on the season is 150.” While CF knows its playoff future is secure, Mount St. Charles is already sneaking a peak at next autumn. “Our record is not indicative of the caliber of this team,” said Henderson. “It comes down to experience, and we had only three returning starters back,” said MSC senior captain James Huling after playing in his final home game. “The guys coming back are going to do very well in the future.” *** Central Falls 3 – 1 -- 4 Mount St. Charles 1 – 2 – 3 First Half: CF – Olavo Monteiro (Kelvin Castillo), 16:27; MSC – Tim Coffey (Steve Whitney), 20:00; CF – Castillo (Michael Martinez), 27:20; CF – Sebastian Godoy (Castillo), 36:30 Second Half: MSC – Nick Arnold (Jason SanAntonio), 4:00; CF – Victor Parra (Castillo), 12:40 MSC – Arnold (Coffey), 18:30.
