PAWTUCKET — Anyone who was out and about in the pre-dawn hours on Friday and noticed anything suspicious is being asked to contact the Pawtucket Police as the department investigates a shooting death that struck close to home.

Sometime between 4:15 and 4:30 a.m., someone shot and killed 63-year-old Carl Seebeck as he was walking near 300 Broadway. Seebeck, who lived at 100 West Cole Street, was the brother of Pawtucket Police Detective Capt. John Seebeck, and eight other surviving siblings.
According to Pawtucket Police Major John J. Whiting, Seebeck died after being wounded during an apparent robbery attempt.
He had been on his way to work and was walking from his house to the Roosevelt Avenue bus stop after having stopped at a nearby Dunkin Donuts, as was his routine, said Whiting. He worked as a manager at the Metro-Park Garage at the Amtrak station in downtown Providence, and rode a RIPTA bus to his job.
Whiting said that the Fire Department had been dispatched to the scene at around 4:36 a.m. for a report of a man down. Seebeck was transported to the Memorial Hospital, where he later died from an injury that was determined to have been caused by a gunshot.
Whiting said that police have been able to determine that Seebeck had been in the Dunkin Donuts at approximately 4:15 a.m. Beyond that, police are still looking for clues and evidence that could lead to finding the suspect.
“Since the inception of this investigation, we have interviewed a significant number of people of interest, but there have been no charges made yet,” said Whiting. “The investigation is still going full-bore, and we’re asking that anyone with any information about this case to please call us,” he said.
Noting that so few people are out at that time of the morning, Whiting said he is appealing to the public to report any details about someone walking or who appeared suspicious in any way, even as far away as downtown Providence or South Attleboro. He stressed that calls may remain anonymous.
The Pawtucket Police can be reached at (401) 727-9100 (ext. 726) for Major John Whiting or ext. 712 for the Desk Sergeant (after hours calls).
Late Friday afternoon, Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch issued a statement saying that he offered his deepest sympathies to Carl Seebeck’s wife, Christine, and to the entire Seebeck family “for the senseless tragedy that has befallen them.” He called Carl Seebeck a “hardworking man who cared about his family and his community,” and said that his family has known the Seebeck family for almost 35 years.
“Det. Capt. John Seebeck has been on the Pawtucket Police Force since 1974, when my Dad was mayor, and I personally worked with Det. Capt. Seebeck on many cases when I was a young prosecutor,” said Lynch.
Lynch also urged members of the community who may have details about the murder to come forward and talk to the police. “With the public’s assistance, the police and my prosecutors can do our very best to apprehend the killer, prosecute the killer to the fullest extent of the law, and ensure that Carl Seebeck did not die in vain.”
According to his Carl M. Seebeck’s obituary, in addition to his wife, Christine, he left his mother, Dorothy, and four children, Kristen, Keith, Carl M. Butler, Jr. and Karen Butler-Tager; two step-children, Anthony and Samuel Saviano; seven brothers, Kenneth, Glenn, Barry, Edmund, Stuart, Eric, and John; two sisters, Lynn Kles and Edith Lebron; four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also the step-father of the late Domenic Saviano and brother of the late Barbara Seebeck.
The funeral service will be Thursday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. in the Manning-Heffern Funeral Home, 68 Broadway, Pawtucket. Calling hours will be Thursday, 4-7 p.m. in the funeral home.
