By DONNA KENNY KIRWAN PAWTUCKET — A “Honey” of a dog survived a doozie of a fall, and the man allegedly responsible now faces charges of animal cruelty.
According to police, a four-month old Chihuahua puppy named Honey was allegedly thrown out of the third floor window of an apartment on Everette Street on Sunday at around 4 p.m. by the boyfriend of the dog’s owner. Police said the suspect, Israel L. Gomez, 29, of 80 Everette St., 2nd, Pawtucket, was arrested on charges of unnecessary cruelty to animals and disorderly conduct stemming from the incident. Pawtucket Animal Control Officer John Holmes said the light tan colored puppy was transported to Ocean State Veterinary Specialists for an evaluation. She has some minor injuries, but is expected to recover, he said. “This could have had a tragic ending. I don’t know how this little dog doesn’t have more injuries,” Holmes said. He added, “For the life of me, I don’t know how someone could do a thing like this.” The incident is still being investigated by Pawtucket Police Detectives and David Holden, director of the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Holmes said. He added that the puppy had been kept overnight at the veterinary clinic and has since been moved to the SPCA facility in East Providence. “They found a couple of little things, medically, that they are looking into. The SPCA is still involved and they are holding the dog,” said Holmes. Holmes said that several staffers at the SPCA “fell in love with the dog,” and that he has had several inquiries from people about adopting her. He said, however, that the dog is not currently available for adoption, and there is a possibility she will be returned to her owner, pending the results of the investigation. SPCA Director David Holden said the medical tests showed that Honey had suffered some bleeding in her eyes due to blunt trauma, was limping slightly and had some other “tender spots.” “We are continuing to monitor her, but overall, she is expected to recover,” he said. Holden, Holmes, and Pawtucket Police noted that both Gomez and the dog’s owner, Candy M. Gonzalez, 23, had been arrested the previous night on unrelated charges. They theorize that a domestic dispute had occurred prior to the dog being hurled out of the window. Gonzalez, a mother of three young children, had been arrested while in a vehicle with Gomez on three warrant charges for felony assault, vandalism, simple assault and making crank or obscene phone calls, according to Pawtucket Police reports. Gomez had also been charged with driving with a suspended license, driving an unregistered vehicle, and operating a vehicle without evidence of insurance, according to Pawtucket Police. Holden said that, ironically, he is scheduled to speak later today on the topic of domestic violence and its link to animal cruelty at the Warwick Police Department in a seminar for police and animal control officers.
