CENTRAL FALLS — A 17-year-old male resident has survived a gunshot wound received near his home Thursday morning, according to Col. Joseph Moran, the city’s police chief.
According to Moran, the incident took place at a Fuller Avenue residence at approximately 1:53 a.m., when two youths, ages 17 and 11, were allegedly playing basketball outside their residence. Moran confirmed that around that time, a car pulled up to the residence and words were exchanged, before an unidentified male in the vehicle allegedly shot at the older boy.
The victim suffered a bullet would in his thigh, and was transported to a nearby hospital, Moran said. He added that the youth was released from the hospital later in the day following treatment.
The youths were out well after the 9:00 p.m. youth curfew the city had introduced following two shootings that occurred in quick succession earlier this year.
Moran said the youths were not technically in violation of the curfew, as their activities prior to the shooting appeared to have been confined to their family’s property. However, he emphasized the need for parents to be vigilant in order to prevent future incidents.
“If their mother’s aware of it, and they’re right in front of their house, that’s not a violation,” Moran said. “(But) we need parents to (watch) their kids. It’s tough because it’s summer time, but it’s an ordinance, and it’s a city law.”
The shooting comes almost exactly a year after a Gonzalez Cab driver was found dead, having apparently been shot by passengers in a spot not far from the site of Thursday’s shooting. Moran said police were actively seeking and pursuing leads, but had not found any suspects so far.
“The problem is I believe that a few more people that (saw) what was going on,” Moran said.
