Saints outlast East Providence E-mail
Monday, 10 December 2007
PAWTUCKET — St. Raphael Academy’s Andrew Bettencourt passed another milestone in his prolific career on Saturday night, scoring career goal No. 100 during the Saints’ 6-4 victory over East Providence High at Lynch Arena.
Bettencourt’s first two goals came in penalty-killing situations and seriously changed the momentum on this high-scoring contest.
After defenseman Dominic Disano opened the scoring at the 8:03 mark of the first period, East Providence gained a man advantage three minutes later. Bettencourt intercepted a pass and broke in alone on Townies goaltender Emily Klucznik, who had little chance to stop the puck.
“Andrew has a great ability to read the play in those situations,” SRA coach Mark Anderson said. “He has excellent speed and that helps him, of course. I don’t know how he does it, but he seems to understand what the other team is trying to do and he anticipates the next pass.”
Bettencourt’s goal gave the Saints a 2-0 lead at the 11:22 mark of the first period. But the Townies were not dismayed, scoring their first goal early in the second stanza when Nicholas Alix beat SRA goaltender Joe Mello.
Disano then stepped up to score his second goal of the season. Tyler Malo, who had assisted on Disano’s first goal, also set this one up.
“Tyler is back from football now,” Anderson said. “He gives us some more speed and strength. He’s not afraid to go into the corners.”
EP then responded with a goal to make it a 3-2 game as Jesse Joy beat Mello at the 13:06 mark. Matt Tougas replied for the Saints just 41 seconds later and then Bettencourt added his second shorthanded goal of the game at the 14:39 mark.
Still not finished, EP cut its deficit to 5-4 on third-period goals by Matt Defontes and James Hall before Bettencourt completed his hat track with 2:18 left in the game.
The Saints, now 2-1 in Division 2 action this season, outshot EP 48-20. Klucznik made 22 saves in goal for the Townies.
“We’re doing alright,” Anderson said, speaking of his squad’s move from Division 3 this season. “We lost in overtime to Cumberland and then beat Pilgrim 8-1.”
The Saints return to action on Saturday night when they host Smithfield in a 9 p.m. game at Lynch Arena.
