RICHMOND – The Pawtucket Red Sox settled for a split of Tuesday’s doubleheader with the Richmond Braves, dropping the opener 7-6 before winning the nightcap 6-1. Pawtucket belted three home runs in the opener with Chris Carter (No. 19), Jonathan Van Every (22) and Dusty Brown (9) all depositing pitches out of The Diamond. Brown’s shot, a two-run blast in the fourth, brought the PawSox to within a run at 4-3. Jed Lowrie tied the game an inning later with a RBI double. Pawtucket went down by two runs heading into its final at-bat before Van Every deadlocked the game at six runs apiece with a two-run shot. On came Lincoln Holdzkom, who walked the first Brave he faced in the seventh. A single placed runners on first and second with a sac bunt pushing both into scoring position. The Braves ended up winning without the aid of a hit as Holdzkom wild-pitched in the winning run. Jon Switzer, who got the start for the PawSox, allowed four runs on seven hits in three innings. Knuckleballer Charlie Zink was the story in the second game. He threw his second straight complete game en route to his 10th win, scattering five hits and allowed one unearned run. Zink struck out four and walked one. The PawSox reached back for more seventh inning lightning in Game No. 2. Up 2-0, Pawtucket exploded for four runs, the highlight belonging to Bobby Kielty (two-run double). The split leaves Pawtucket 24 games over .500 (59-35) and improve to a season-high 5 ½ games over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the IL North. The series with Richmond wraps up tonight with Edgar Martinez getting the pitching nod for the locals.
