Police name suspect in stabbing near Town Hall E-mail

BY VINAYA SAKSENA

CUMBERLAND — Police have revealed the name of a man suspected of stabbing a Cumberland man during an altercation near town hall earlier this week.

Police are seeking 20-year-old David Lezcano, whose last known residence was in Cumberland, in the Monday night stabbing that left one man injured after a brief altercation. The victim’s condition was not known as of press time, though his injuries were not believed to be serious.
Deputy Chief Michael Kinch of the Cumberland Police Department said that officers responded to the area of Broad Street and Titus Street at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Monday for a report of an injury resulting from a fight. When the officers arrived, they found an 18-year-old Cumberland male who had suffered an unspecified number of stab wounds.
“There was a male victim who had more than one stab wound,” Kinch confirmed earlier this week. “At this time, we (believe) he might have had an altercation there.”
Details of the alleged altercation and stabbing were not entirely clear as of press time. However, Kinch said it appeared that a group of males, including the victim, had gathered near the Currier Chase Play Area, where an argument appeared to have broken out, resulting in a fight and the alleged stabbing.
Kinch said the victim was not a resident of the neighborhood in which the stabbing allegedly occurred. A motive for the stabbing was not known.
According to Rhode Island Judiciary records, Lezcano was arrested last year on a charge of driving with a suspended license. He pled no lo in June  2007 and paid a fine for the offense in August.
According to police, Lezcano was described in records as a Hispanic male, approximately 5-feet, 1-inch tall. However, Sgt. William Wilkie pointed out that the aforementioned information was not current, and that he believed Lezcano to be taller.
Kinch wished to assure residents that there was no reason to fear that the stabbing may be the beginning of a rash of random violence. In fact, he said it appeared that Lezcano and the victim may have been involved in confrontations with each other in the past.
“The direction we’re in is that this is not an isolated incident,” Kinch said. “So I just want to reassure Cumberland residents that this was not a random act.”

I love the fact that the bridge is now open again and it didn't
take as long as I thought!  Good work!

There are no good breakfast places now that Tigger's burned down.
The sidewalks are rolled up before 7pm and there is a lack of a friendly atmosphere.
I just returned from England and the people there bent over backwards to help us
out and were treated us like visiting dignitaries. There is nothing to do
at night except drink alcohol and heaven forbid if you drive afterward.  I don't
really know what can be done but it's an unfriendly place.
