By DONNA KENNY KIRWAN SEEKONK — The town has scheduled a special election on Monday, Aug. 18, to fill the vacant seat on the Board of Selectmen that came about with the sudden resignation of Carol Bragg.
For anyone wishing to run, the deadline for returning completed nomination papers is Monday, June 30, at 5 p.m. at Town Hall. Bragg, who was elected to the board in a three-way race in April, 2007, submitted a letter of resignation to the board last Monday. She did not elaborate on her reasons for stepping down, and has not returned several phone calls that were placed to her. The person who wins the special election will fill the remainder of Bragg’s unexpired term, which expires in April 2010. So far, the only person to come forward for Bragg’s seat is Francis Cavaco, a retired UPS truck driver from Kent Drive who is also a member of the town’s Finance Committee. Cavaco has run for a selectmen’s seat twice before but has been unsuccessful. He was defeated by Bragg in a three-way race in 2007 that also included then-incumbent David Viera, and was defeated again this year. According to Town Clerk Jan Parker, Cavaco has stepped down from the Finance Committee until after the election, in keeping with provisions in the Town Charter. The Board of Selectmen approved the Aug. 18 date after Parker reported that it would be pose logistical problems to hold the special election on the same day as the Sept. 16 state primary. She added that it would also not be provide much of a cost savings.
