BY VINAYA SAKSENA CENTRAL FALLS — An adult and four juveniles were arrested Monday night after being confronted by a police officer for a violation of the city’s recently instated curfew, according to a police report. The arrests were reported by Officer Frank Rodriguez in the area of Fletcher Street, with the incident taking place shortly after 10 p.m.
The incident led to five arrests, including one adult, identified as Jose G. Dasilva, age 36, of 848 Lonsdale Ave. who was apprehended on a bench warrant from the sixth district court and a family court warrant. Four juveniles were also arrested: a 16-year-old and 14-year-old, both from Pawtucket, on charges of disorderly conduct (fighting/ tumultuous behavior); a 17-year-old Central Falls resident charged with simple assault/ battery and obstructing an officer in the execution of duty; and a 16-year-old Central Falls youth charged with obstructing an officer in the execution of duty and resisting legal or illegal arrest. Rodriguez reported seeing a group of youths hanging around in front of a home on Fletcher Street and, given the time, telling them that they needed to go inside due to the 9 p.m. curfew. One of the youths allegedly began to argue with the officer, saying he did not have to move inside the house if he did not want to, but was walked into the house by friends, preventing the incident from escalating further. Rodriguez reported returning to the area at about 10:30 and again noticing a group of youths outside the apartment, who then moved back inside the apartment when they saw him. When he spoke to the tenant, Rodriguez wrote, he could detect the odor of marijuana emanating from the apartment. He then began running the names of people in the apartment for warrants, turning up one for Dasilva. According to his report, Rodriguez was attempting to arrest Dasilva when a juvenile came running toward him. He pushed the juvenile back, but was then charged and pushed by another juvenile who came in from another room. The youth ducked back into another room when Rodriguez released pepper spray in his direction. A short time later, more officers arrived on the scene, and assisted in the arrest of the two juveniles. Outside the residence, two female juveniles were reportedly “told to leave the area several times,” but refused to go. Both were placed under arrest for disorderly conduct. All of the suspects were taken to police headquarters for processing, according to Rodriguez’ report. Three of the juveniles were released to their parents, while one was released to his brother, with court dates to be determined later, police said. Dasilva, meanwhile, was placed in a cell until a court hearing the following morning, according to police.
