PawSox' Kottaras redeems himself E-mail
Tuesday, 15 April 2008
LOUISVILLE -- George Kottaras made up for a passed ball that let in the winning run in Monday's opener of a doubleheader against Louisville by pounding two homers in the nightcap as the Pawtucket Red Sox gained a split with the Bats.
Kottaras led Pawtucket to an 8-2 win in the second game with his homers that supported Charlie Zink's one-hit pitching over five innings. The knuckleballer's bid for a no-hitter was thwarted in the bottom of the fifth when Adam Rosales reached on an infield single. In Zink's past two starts, he has not allowed a run to cross the plate, a span of nine and one-third innings.
The Paw Sox found runs hard to come by against Louisville starter Homer Bailey -- one of Cincinnati's top prospects -- in the opener, a 3-2 loss.
Bailey limited Pawtucket to single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and fell two outs shy of a complete game. Reliever Bill Bray came in to strike out Jonathan Van Every and Joe Thurston to end the game.
PawSox starter Chris Smith matched pitches with Bailey, allowing only six hits and three runs -- two earned -- in 5.2 innings. The winning run scored in the bottom of the sixth on a passed ball by Kottaras.
The two teams play again this evening at 7 p.m. in the series finale.
