Indians rough up Hansack E-mail

PAWTUCKET – The weather conditions at McCoy Stadium for the finale of Sunday’s four-game set between Pawtucket and Indianapolis were no question frightful.

Simply put, the players had to battle the cold besides each other.
On a day which the World Series trophies lit up Ben Mondor Way, the PawSox came oh-so-close to capping off the day with an exclamation point.
Unfortunately Keith Ginter popped up to end the ballgame, leaving the bases loaded in a 5-4 loss by the hometowners. Pawtucket trailed by three runs heading into its final turn, drawing to within one on an RBI single from Brandon Moss and a bases loaded walk from Bobby Kielty, who collected two RBIs without the aid of a base hit.
The game was hardly played at a crisp pace. Four Indians pitchers combined for four walks with starter Luis Munoz responsible for seven. Munoz would have been in line for the win, yet his bout with wildness resulted in him only going four innings.
Pawtucket didn’t receive a quality outing from its own starting pitcher. Devern Hansack was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs and seven hits in four innings. The big blow came off the bat of Indians second baseman Luis Ordaz, who connected on a three-run home run in the second inning.
“Hansack has been down for awhile,” said PawSox skipper Ron Johnson, alluding to the fact the native of Nicaragua hasn’t been in a game in close to two weeks. “It was good for him to get this outing out of the way because I know he’ll be that much better next time. He had good stuff but just some pitches out over the plate and paid for it.”
Pawtucket’s bullpen was only touched for one unearned run in five innings, the run belonging to Craig Hansen.
The defensive star of the day goes to Dusty Brown, who gunned down two would-be Indianapolis base stealers. “One of those guys had a running start and he still threw him out,” noted Johnson. “I was told [by Portland manager Arnie Beyeler] that this guy can shut down a running game, and I’m seeing exactly what Arnie is talking about. That’s a very strong arm and the release is quick.”
T.J. Beam encountered some rough patches on his way to picking up the save. The Indians reliever walked three in the ninth and fell behind Ginter before getting the PawSox third baseman to lift a popup.
The PawSox and Indians managed a split with Pawtucket grabbing wins in the first two contests. The homestand continues tonight with the newest member of the International League coming to town in the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
Mike Timlin will get the start in what will be the first of two rehab appearances (the other scheduled to come Wednesday). The 42-year-old reliever will be followed by Michael Tejera, who pitched for Indianapolis last season, posting a 3.90 ERA.
