PAWTUCKET --- Kyle Dumont kicked off his season in grand fashion.

The Tolman High senior southpaw pitcher did it all on Wednesday afternoon in his team’s Division II-East opener at Max Read Field against crosstown rival Shea High. On the mound, Dumont struck out 14 batters en route to a superb five-hitter. At the plate, he helped his cause by going 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs and five runs batted in to lead the Tigers to a 14-2 victory.
The game was stopped in the top of the seventh inning by the 12-run mercy rule, as the Tigers exploded for four runs for the second straight inning.
Tolman collected 16 hits off three pitchers, which was more than enough support for Dumont, who struck out the side in the fourth and sixth innings, walked two, and picked off a pair of runners. His only mistake of the afternoon came in the third, when with two outs, he yielded a two-run double to left by Niyih Nunez that drove in Arianny Segura and Shawn Puello.
The Tigers scored all the runs they needed in the first two innings off losing pitcher Max Perry. In the first, a two-out infield error with the bases loaded brought in a pair of runs, and in the second, Dumont smacked a two-run double to the gap in right-center field to plate Kyle Traghella and Dylan Ducharme.
Nunez’s run-scoring double cut the Raiders’ deficit in half, but the Tigers got those runs back in the fourth. With one gone, Ducharme walked and Dumont followed with a long two-run homer to straightaway center that sailed into the woods behind the fence.
In the sixth, Dumont ignited the Tigers’ first four-run rally with his second homer, a solo blast to right field with one out that left the yard in a hurry and also found its way into the woods beyond the field.

Two batters later, Joaquim Cruz drove in a run with a base hit to center, and after a pair of two-out walks loaded the bases, Mike Paine capped the rally with a two-run single to left.
Back-to-back RBI doubles by Brent Elliott and Cruz highlighted the Tigers’ seventh-inning uprising.
Elliott finished the day with three hits, Traghella had three stolen bases, and Dumont and Ducharme each also scored three times. Segura legged out a pair of infield singles to lead the Raiders’ offense.
Both teams return in action this afternoon. The Raiders entertain neighboring Providence Country Day in a 3:45 p.m. game, while the Tigers head to Seekonk to face the Wheeler School in a 4:15 p.m. contest at the Wheeler School Farm on Walker Street. This affair will be Wheeler’s first baseball game as a Rhode Island Interscholastic League entry.
