By DONNA KENNY KIRWAN PAWTUCKET — A city man charged with a fatal hit-and-run accident in Seekonk that claimed the life of a Seekonk woman, and his wife, have now been charged by Pawtucket Police on insurance fraud and other charges associated with an alleged cover-up related to the crime.
Laudalino C. Camara, 50, and Maria Camara, 48, both of 626 Prospect St., Pawtucket, were arrested on Wednesday by Pawtucket Police detectives in connection with their actions in Pawtucket on October 15, 2007, the day after the October 14, 2007 accident that killed 38-year-old Maria Aguiar of Chestnut Street. On Oct. 14, 2007, at around 6:22 p.m., Laudalino Camara allegedly struck and killed Aguiar with his white sport utility vehicle while the mother-of-three was walking down Chestnut Street with her 10-year-old daughter. Seekonk Police say he fled the scene and drove home. According to Pawtucket Police, on Oct. 15, 2007, at around 10:06 a.m., Maria Camara was involved in a one-car accident on Route 95 south in Pawtucket while driving a 2002 white GMC Denali. Pawtucket Police detectives were contacted by investigators from the Seekonk Police Department for assistance in looking into the circumstances of Camara’s accident. After a lengthy investigation involving members of the Pawtucket Police, Seekonk Police, and the Massachusetts State Police, arrest warrants were issued on Wednesday for the Camaras. Both Laudalino and Maria Camara were charged with insurance fraud, obtaining money under false pretenses and two counts of conspiracy related to Maria’s accident and the couple’s resulting actions. In addition, Maria Camara, who is alleged by police to have purposely crashed the couple’s white SUV to cover up the damage from Laudalino’s alleged hit-and-run, was charged with obstructing an officer in execution of duty. The couple was arraigned on the charges in Providence Superior Court on Wednesday morning, where they were released after posting bail, according to Pawtucket Police. On Jan. 28, Laudalino was formally charged in New Bedford Superior Court with motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of an accident with death resulting, in connection with the accident that killed Maria Aguiar. He pleaded not guilty and was freed on $125,000 cash bail pending a hearing scheduled for March 27. According to previous police reports of the Oct. 14 accident, Laudalino Camara allegedly sped past Aguiar’s daughter, who was riding a bicycle, and struck Maria Aguiar head-on, throwing her onto the SUVs hood. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and Seekonk Police issued a call for the public’s help in locating the white SUV allegedly involved in the accident. The next day, Pawtucket and Cumberland Police responded to a single-car accident on Route 95 south in Pawtucket involving Maria Camara. She had struck Jersey barriers and a light pole, which police later concluded was done to mask the damage from her husband’s accident the previous day. After the second accident, and while police were still on the lookout for a white SUV with damage, Laudalino Camara brought the vehicle to an East Providence body repair shop. Several days later, a woman who lived near the shop noticed the damaged SUV and called Seekonk Police. Prosectors and police said that paint chips taken from the scene and from the body shop matched those from Camara’s SUV. Also found at the body shop was a human tooth, which matched one that Aguiar was reportedly missing in an autopsy report, according to previous reports. Following a month’s long investigation, Camara was arrested on November 9, 2007, while at his job at American Granite in Seekonk. |
