LINCOLN --- It's not everyday that a world champion puts her title belt on the line against a fighter with 20 losses and a record slightly above .500, but don't expect Jaime Clampitt to take Belinda Laracuente for granted when they meet on Friday, March 14, at the Twin River Events Center.

Clampitt, a Pawtucket resident, three-time world champion, and the IWBF (International Women's Boxing Federation) lightweight champ, will defend her title against Laracuente, a New York City product via Puerto Rico, in the 10-round co-feature of Classic Entertainment & Sports' "Rumble at the River" show.

Clampitt, who is 18-3-1 (7 KOs), is fresh off a magnificent year that saw her capture her third IWBF title by defeating Mia St. John last February in at the R.I. Convention Center, defend it 4 1/2 months later by avenging a 2004 defeat to Jane Couch at Foxwoods Resort Casino, improve to No. 2 in the WBC (World Boxing Council) and No. 3 in the WBA (World Boxing Association) rankings, and receive the 2007 Canadian Female Boxer of the Year Award.

St. John and Couch had a combined record of 71-16-2 when they stepped into the ring to fight Clampitt. Laracuente's record is 23-20-2 (9 KOs), but it's quite deceiving.

Twenty of Laracuente's last 21 fights -- dating back to June 28, 2003 -- have been against world champions, and 10 of them were world title bouts against the likes of Christy Martin, Jelena Mrdjenovich, Sumya Anani, Mary Jo Sanders, and Holly Holm, who two weeks ago, defended her IFBA (International Female Boxing Association) welterweight title by defeating Laracuente in a close 10-round unanimous decision.

"I give her the utmost respect," admitted Clampitt. "Belinda's fought absolutely everyone from 120 to 147 pounds. She always comes to fight, and a lot of times, she comes as a different fighter. Sometimes you will see Belinda box, and sometimes you will see her come out and be a little slugger. It just depends on who she's boxing and what she feels like doing that evening."

Clampitt and her trainer, Kurt Reader, have studied tapes of Laracuente in action, and Clampitt also saw Laracuente's fight with Holm and came away very impressed with her future opponent.

"Holly's a big 147-pounder who walks around like a 160-pounder, and Belinda's about the same height as me, at 5-6," said Clampitt. "But I was impressed with Belinda's skills. She showed a lot of heart and she actually won the last four rounds of that fight. She's an unbelievable fighter and I know I'm going to have to be at my best and be ready for her."

Laracuente finally won her first title last June in Las Vegas when she notched a 12-round unanimous decision victory over Melissa Del Valle for Del Valle's IGBU (International Global Boxing Union) junior welterweight title. Del Valle had entered that fight with a 29-5-1 (11 KOs) record.

"She's an upsetter," noted Clampitt. "She scores upsets, and I have to be prepared so it doesn't happen to me. Right now, I'm in great shape and my weight's good, and I just need to go in there and be prepared for anything because we really don't know what Belinda's going to bring that night."

The Clampitt-Laracuente fight comes before the 10-round main event pitting "The Pride of Providence" Peter Manfredo Jr. against Shane "The Irish Hitman" Benfield in a light heavyweight bout.

Two other fights on the undercard feature Chris McInerney (9-1-1, 6 KOs) against Tim "The Hammer" Flamos (19-4-1, 7 KOs) of Brockton in a six-round cruiserweight bout, and Russian native Andre Nevsky (3-0, 3 KOs) of Worcester vs. Eric Pinarreta (2-1, 2 KOs) of New Bedford in a four-round middleweight fight. Light heavyweight "Irish" Joey McCreedy (6-1, 4 KOs) of Lowell and Puerto Rican native Isander Beauchamp (3-0) of Lynn will also apear on the undercard.

Tickets are $150 (Jimmy's Platinum Club), $100 (Gold), $75 (Silver), $50 (Bronze), $40, and $35 (ADA stage seating) are available through the Twin River Events Center's box office, CES at 401-724-2253/2254 or www.cesboxing.com, or any TicketMaster location.

Twin River has also waived its 18+ rule for this event, and anyone under the age of 18 must enter through the West entrance and be accompained at all times by an adult. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the first bout is scheduled for 7 p.m.
