PC hoopsters net big road victory over UConn E-mail
Friday, 18 January 2008
HARTFORD – Tim Welsh could make a pretty penny amongst his Big East peers if he ever decided to divulge his secret of taming the University of Connecticut on its home court.
Don’t expect Welsh to pass down the family recipe. The Providence coach will tell you just how hard it is to win a Big East road game, let alone cook up four straight road wins against a singular opponent.
That aforementioned opponent just happens to be UConn, who watched in horror as PC performed an all too familiar second-half gong show at its own expense Thursday.
Buoyed by a 3-point attack that was purely relentless, the Friars booted the Huskies off the XL Center hardwood for the third consecutive time, 77-65.
By BRENDAN McGAIR Sports writer HARTFORD – Tim Welsh could make a pretty penny amongst his Big East peers if he ever decided to divulge his secret of taming the University of Connecticut on its home court. Though Providence in recent years has owned UConn in its backyard (one in Storrs, the last three coming in Hartford), Welsh will gladly welcome a game at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center any time. “I dunno,” said Welsh when asked to pinpoint the Friars’ success at the Huskies’ expense. “We have some familiarity with the building, but they’ve beaten us here many more times than we have. I’ll play at home any time; I don’t want to come over here.” On the strength of a dominating second-half showing, one that featured precision marksmanship by the Friars and a chilly offensive display by the home team, PC turned a halftime nail-biter (34-32 Huskies) into a convincing win. The Friars outscored the Huskies 45-31 in final 20 minutes as Connecticut made good on only eight of 33 attempts. What makes the barrage of 3’s extra noteworthy, besides it being 14-for-24 (58 percent), was that the treys rained down from multiple Friars. Though he’s still bothered by a tender ankle that shelved for three weeks, Dwain Williams’ 3-point stroke has not suffered as a result. The sophomore poured in a career-high 23 points, connecting on six 3’s – some of which were so deep they were met with dread by Welsh. “The one time I was yelling at him to pull the ball out, he just teed the ball up and it went it,” said Welsh. “He looked at me and winked. I had to laugh and say ‘you little (bleep).’” “I’m still in pain, but just gotta play through it,” said Williams. “I’ve been able to get stronger with the rest and through rehab. I feel real good out there.” Brian McKenzie added 20 points and four 3’s while Geoff McDermott (12 points) and Jeff Xavier (11 points) rounded out the double figure scorers for PC. Five different Friars registered a trey as the Huskies learned the hard way that a heavy price is paid if you fall asleep on Providence’s cadre of shooters. “It’s pretty hard, especially now that Geoff has stepped up his shooting,” said McKenzie. “You just never know who’s going to get hot on a given night; you’ve got to pick your poison.” The game mirrored the one that took place 356 days ago when the building was known as the Hartford Civic Center. Last January the Huskies ran out to a 45-34 halftime lead only to watch Providence respond by scoring the first 16 points of the second half en route to the Friars running away, 84-72. Fast forward to Thursday and once again Providence changed the game’s complexion thanks in large part to matching UConn’s toughness. The Friars pushed the Huskies away from their comfort zone, the paint, and out towards the arc, where Connecticut isn’t known for doing productive business. (two 3’s in the second half, four in the game). “Just contesting all the time and getting a body on somebody,” said McDermott, who as usual filled up the stat sheet (11 rebounds, six assists, four steals). The second-half clamp down job by PC was a far cry from the first half, when Connecticut seemed to score at will. The Huskies had 22 points in the paint in the first, which played a big part in them shooting 52 percent. “We watched them lay the ball up [in the first half], but they didn’t get anything easy in the second half,” said Welsh. “ With the defense now set, the Friars began to bombard the Huskies with a succession of 3’s. McKenzie and Williams went back-to-back to give PC a 43-38 lead. Williams nailed a triple to put Providence up 12 (60-48) with eight minutes remaining. The Huskies went for a long stretch in the second half without point guard A.J. Price, who picked up his fourth foul with 12:47 to go. Price, who finished with 12 points, proved just how vital he as Connecticut was 2-of-15 to begin the second half. The Friars and Huskies entered Thursday neighbors in a few key areas. Both clubs came in with identical Big East records (2-2); both are kissing cousins in the RPI rankings (PC is 31st, Connecticut No. 36). Today it’s the Friars who will likely wake up feeling good about themselves. Big East clubs have just two road league wins to date, but for the Friars, their contribution is the latest installment of “Home Sweet (Connecticut) Home.” “You’ll take any road win in this league,” said Welsh.
