Clipper matmen third in NE tourney E-mail
Monday, 08 March 2010
NEW HAVEN, Ct. – Heading into Saturday morning’s quarterfinal round of the New England wrestling championships, Cumberland High was running neck-and-neck with Timberlane, N.H. and Burlington, Mass. in the team race.
The Clippers had four wrestlers alive in the championship bracket – returning NE champ Shai Lariviere at 112, brother Shoneil at 119, former state champion Jaron Parent at 125 and current state champ Cameron Glad at 171.
In addition, 103-pounder Erik Travers was doing good work in the consolation brackets.
“You win the New Englands by getting a couple kids into the finals,” Cumberland coach Steve Gordon said on Sunday morning after his Clippers finished third in the team race. Timberlane won it with 89 points and Burlington finished second with 75.5. Cumberland took third with 69 points.
“New Englands are tough,” Gordon said. “Everyone you wrestle is either a state champ or a runnerup or third-place finisher. My kids did a phenomenal job. We just had a tough time in the quarterfinals.”
The quarters opened for Cumberland with Shai Lariviere’s surprising 9-4 loss to Newton North’s Sam Shames.
“Shai beat Shames last year,” Gordon said. “He fell behind in this match and couldn’t catch up. Shames looked huge, like he weighed 10 pounds more than Shai. They don’t have a second-day weigh-in at New Englands and that is something that has to be corrected. It puts a kid like Shai who doesn’t have to cut much weight at a real disadvantage.”
Shai came back to finish third in his weight class and ended the season with just one loss.
Twin brother Shoneil rallied the Clippers with a pin in his quarterfinal match, then lost to Danbury, Ct.’s Charles Costanzo in the semis by a 6-4 margin in overtime.
“Costanzo beat Shoneil 7-0 in our tournament back in January,” Gordon said. “I thought Shoneil wrestled great in this tournament.”
Shoneil finished fifth overall, losing to Lawrence, Ma.’s Matt Buco 7-3 in the consis before beating Warwick Veterans’ Anthony Meyers 14-1 in the fifth-place match.
Cumberland’s Jaron Parent lost a 2-1 decision to Bridgewater-Raynham’s Matt Libby in the quarters. Gordon felt his wrestler was victimized by a questionable two-point predicament call. Parent then beat a couple of tough kids in the consis before losing 7-1 in the third-place match to Windham, Ct’s Miquel Calixto.
Travers finished 4-2 in his six matches at 103.
“Erik earned some valuable experience the past two weeks,” Gordon said. “He shows unbelievable poise for a freshman.”
Glad and 152-pounder Ricky McCoy failed to place in their weight classes. Glad got pinned in the quarters by Middletown, Ct.’s Devon Carrillo, who ended up placing fourth at 171. Glad, who had won two matches to get to the quarters, then won his first consi bout before losing to eventual third-place finisher Stephen Martin of Bonny Eagle, Me.
Lincoln High heavyweight Anthony Joyce, a legitimate 285-pounder, turned heads by reaching the semifinals before getting pinned by runnerup Danny Murphy of Weymouth, Ma. Joyce then beat North Quincy’s Dan Amato in the consis before losing a 2-1 verdict to Timberlane’s Ben Tammany in the third-place match.
“Joyce wrestled very smart,” Gordon said. “He scored points when he needed to. Everybody is very impressed with him.”
Ponaganset state champion Phil Colasante lost his opener, won his first consi bout and then was eliminated in the next round, finishing 1-2 in the tournament.
Warwick Veterans’ 125-pounder Mike Meyers won his second straight NE title and was named Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament. Massachusetts, as a state, won 10 of the 14 individual weight titles.
Next year’s tournament will be held at the Providence Career & Athletic Center.
“That gives us something to set our sights on,” Gordon said. “We have our three lightweights (Travers and the twins) back. We’ve got some other good kids returning.”
Cumberland’s best finish ever at New Englands came back in 1980 when the Clippers, led by three-time NE champion Dan Charland and 3-time state champ Glenn Walsh, finished in second, one-half point out of first place.
“This is our second-best finish at New Englands,” Gordon said. “We finished 20 points behind Timberlane. You don’t need many wrestlers to win New Englands. You just need to get two or three into the finals.”

Saturday night I attended the semi-final girls basketball
game vs Townies Girls team as an aunt of one of the EP players. It was an exciting
all-around game for both teams, and I give credit to my niece and the Townie girls
too for a great season.  <br />I just have to say though, that I was
particularly impressed with the talent, poise and unflappable playing style of this
Tolman girls team! It can only speak well of a great coaching staff, and their love
and encouragement of these talented girls. After the game, the low-key humilty that
the Tolman girls displayed, showed real sportsmanship and class. I have a feeling
that this season is the "Year of the Tiger" and hope that they go straight on to
victory in the championship. No matter what the outcome though, they've gained a new
loyal fan in me, and I look forward to following the next seasons with real
interest. This is the way that high school sports should be played! You go Tolman
girls! - Regina Orio
