By ERIC BENEVIDES Sports writer PAWTUCKET --- Cambridge Rindge & Latin is the sixth-ranked team in the Eastern Mass. polls, and for good reason.
Offensively, the Falcons are averaging just a hair over 80 points per game and have four starters averaging double figures in points. But defensively, they've quietly established themselves as one of the top teams in their state, allowing just under 50 points per game, and St. Raphael Academy found that out firsthand on Wednesday night at the Saints' Alumni Hall. The visiting Falcons pressed the Saints from start to finish, forcing 24 turnovers and limiting their hosts to a season-low in scoring en route to a 62-47 victory that gave the visitors their seventh win in eight games. "You have to fight for your life when you play those guys," said SRA coach Tom "Saar" Sorrentine, whose crew slipped to 7-2 and returns to the Division 1 wars tomorrow night with a crossover clash against East Providence High. "They play line-to-line, full court, and they pressure the ball the whole time. It's a workout when you play them. You have to fight for every step you take on the court." Despite their turnover woes and lack of scoring, the Saints were within striking distance of the Falcons for more than three quarters of the night. The visitors broke open a back-and-forth contest with an 11-point run 6 1/2 minutes into the game that gave them a 23-13 lead, but the Saints cut their deficit to five (28-23) at the break and tied the score in the opening minute of the second half on a layup by Doug Hopper and a three-pointer by Jimmy McKnight. The Falcons answered back with the next two layups to reclaim their lead for good, but the Saints continued to battle them tough. They were only down by five (45-40) with 6:23 to play in the game, but the Falcons then ran off the next 10 points to put the game out of reach. "They're a very good team to play," said Sorrentine. "The pressure doesn't get much higher than what they give you. We've played them the last three or four years and beat them the last two, but they finally got us this time." Speedy guard Robert Wesley led the Falcons with a game-high 20 points, but none of his teammates managed to break double figures. Vinson Givans, who was a monster on the boards, and Ernest Pierre-Louis, Wesley's backcourt partner, each added nine. The Saints received another double-double from senior center Jeff Holmes, who produced 17 points and 18 rebounds, but no one else scored more than five points, as Sorrentine made the most out of this non-league contest by substituting early and often and giving all of his players ample playing time. "I didn't want to kill these guys this game," added Sorrentine. "I wanted to play a lot of guys and rest some of them for our game on Friday night. (On Tuesday night against Mount Pleasant), we played mostly seven guys, so tonight, we wanted to get everyone playing and see what they can do." *** CAMBRIDGE RINDGE & LATIN (62): Jeff Pierre-Louis 0 0-0 0, Matt Bodden 0 0-0 0, Ernest Pierre-Louis 3 0-0 9, Robert Wesley 6 6-10 20, Takeane Gomes 3 0-0 7, Nathan Qualls-Betts 3 1-2 7, Claude Louis 1 0-0 2, Jerard Warren 3 2-3 8, Vinson Givans 4 1-4 9, Liam McMahon 0 0-0 0. Saturday night I attended the semi-final girls basketball game vs Townies Girls team as an aunt of one of the EP players. It was an exciting all-around game for both teams, and I give credit to my niece and the Townie girls too for a great season. <br />I just have to say though, that I was particularly impressed with the talent, poise and unflappable playing style of this Tolman girls team! It can only speak well of a great coaching staff, and their love and encouragement of these talented girls. After the game, the low-key humilty that the Tolman girls displayed, showed real sportsmanship and class. I have a feeling that this season is the "Year of the Tiger" and hope that they go straight on to victory in the championship. No matter what the outcome though, they've gained a new loyal fan in me, and I look forward to following the next seasons with real interest. This is the way that high school sports should be played! You go Tolman girls! - Regina Orio
