BARRINGTON – Defense ruled on Saturday night when East Providence and Barrington met in a battle of unbeaten Division I powers at Victory Field. Barrington’s defense made the game’s biggest play midway through the first quarter when Marc DeSisto intercepted EP quarterback Robby Delgado’s pass and returned it to the Townies’ 25-yard line. The Eagles’ offense quickly converted as halfback Mike Read ran 25 yards for a touchdown on first down. East Providence later drove to Barrington’s 17-yard line late in the first half before Aaron Spivey missed a field goal, slipping on the wet turf as he attempted his kick. Barrington coach Bill McCagney made an excellent strategical call halfway through the third quarter, choosing to punt from EP’s 37-yard line on fourth-and-10. Brandon Lewis’s boot was downed at the Townies’ three-yard line. Backed up against its own goal line, EP again got sloppy with the football. Delgado was hit while trying to pitch the ball to halfback Emerson Perez and Barrington recovered the football at EP’s one-yard line. Read plunged in for the insurance touchdown and Lewis added the extra point for a 14-0 lead. The Townies visit Division II Tolman (1-3 in league play) for a non-league encounter on Friday night at Pariseau Field in Pawtucket. *** East Providence 0 – 0 – 0 – 0 – 0 Barrington 0 – 7 – 0 – 7 – 14 BARR – Mike Read 25 run (Brandon Lewis kick) BARR – Mike Read 1 run (Lewis kick)
