SRA gridders stop Smithfield E-mail
Monday, 12 October 2009
SMITHFIELD – Jean-Daniel Roussel scored three touchdowns on Friday night while leading St. Raphael Academy to a 28-6 non-league victory over Smithfield.
Roussel scored on runs of 10 and 19 yards and then returned an intercepted pass 64 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Patrick Miranda added a 71-yard touchdown runs for the Saints, who are 2-3 overall and 0-2 in Division I so far this season.
“It was good for a young football team like ours to have a game like this,” Saints coach Mike Sassi said. “We need to get some confidence in ourselves. Unfortunately, I think our kids kind of took Smithfield lightly. We only led 7-6 at halftime.”
After Roussel’s 19-yard TD run gave the Saints a 7-0 lead, SRA’s defense forced Smithfield to punt. Instead of getting the ball back, though, the Saints committed an illegal block before the change of possession and Smithfield got the ball back and drove for its only touchdown of the game.
“That’s the kind of dumb mistakes we have been making,” said Sassi,.
Roussel ran for 112 yards on 15 carries.
Defensively, Ricardo Pognon, Mike Dolan, and Miranda led the way for the Saints, who return to divisional play on Friday night with a road game against winless North Kingstown High.
Smithfield is also back in league action with a home game against East Greenwich High on Friday night.

Saturday night I attended the semi-final girls basketball
game vs Townies Girls team as an aunt of one of the EP players. It was an exciting
all-around game for both teams, and I give credit to my niece and the Townie girls
too for a great season.  <br />I just have to say though, that I was
particularly impressed with the talent, poise and unflappable playing style of this
Tolman girls team! It can only speak well of a great coaching staff, and their love
and encouragement of these talented girls. After the game, the low-key humilty that
the Tolman girls displayed, showed real sportsmanship and class. I have a feeling
that this season is the "Year of the Tiger" and hope that they go straight on to
victory in the championship. No matter what the outcome though, they've gained a new
loyal fan in me, and I look forward to following the next seasons with real
interest. This is the way that high school sports should be played! You go Tolman
girls! - Regina Orio
