LINCOLN â€” Twin River has teamed up with local law enforcement agencies by organizing a program to utilize their unclaimed lost or stolen bicycles in an effort known as Project Broken Wheel.
â€śWe take parts from each of the broken bicycles in order to make them whole again,â€ť said Frank Martucci, general manager of beverage operations for Twin River. â€śOur employees really pulled together and were able to bring smiles to so many little faces this holiday season.â€ť
The â€ślike newâ€ť bicycles are being donated back into the Northern Rhode Island community this week just in time for the holidays. Thirty-five bicycles were donated to Lincolnâ€™s Adopt-A-Family Program on Thursday. An additional 10 will be donated to the Family Literacy Center in Manville next week as well as the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Newport.
Although Twin River and its employees have already adopted six families in need within the Blackstone Valley this holiday season, employees were more than happy to assist in this program and lend a helping hand during the holiday season, said Kim Ward, Twin Riverâ€™s director of Public & Community Affairs.
â€śWe had an abundance of bicycles donated from the local community and many of our employees brought in their old or new bicycles,â€ť Ward said. â€śWeâ€™ve been receiving calls daily for more donations.
â€śThis will be the second year Twin River has participated in Project Broken Wheel and has intensions of running this program again in the spring so the children may enjoy their bikes in the nice weather.â€ť
Bike donations are still being accepted. Bikes may be brought to Twin Riverâ€™s back loading dock between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Please visit the Project Broken Wheelâ€™s Facebook page for more information.
The Twin River team, led by Martucci, is comprised of more than 40 Twin River employees and local hospitality industry friends and volunteers, including the U.S. Bartendersâ€™ Guild and 4zero1 Entertainment Group. They will have contributed 120 hours on this project.
