PAWTUCKET – Tolman High took care of business in the preliminary round of the Division II playoffs on Thursday night, rolling to a 3-1 victory over Tiverton.
The sixth-seeded Tigers advance to Monday’s 6:30 p.m. quarterfinal round matchup at Cumberland. The Clippers, who ruled Division II-North with a 12-2 record, are seeded No. 3 overall in the tournament, behind top seed Exeter/West Greenwich (14-0) and second seed Bay View (13-1).
Tolman, which tied for second in the North with Central Falls (both teams were 11-3), had its hands full with an 8-6 Tiverton team. Tolman won the first game 25-14 but had to rally for a 27-25 victory in the second game. Tiverton then won the third game 25-15 before Tolman regained control and closed out the match, 25-19.
“We became complacent in the second game and had to rally,” Tolman coach Roger Tow said. “That should have been the turning point but you have to give Tiverton credit. Usually when you lose a close game like that, it’s hard to come back, but they won the next game.”
The decisive fourth game was tied at 9-9 before Tolman went on a 5-0 run with Jackie Aguilera doing the serving. Tiverton got within two points at 15-13, only to see Tolman run off three more points for a 19-13 lead. Tiverton rallied to within three again at 22-19. Tolman then closed it out by scoring the final three points.
Zana Daluz led Tolman with 13 kills. Karen Mejias collected 14 digs. Taja Williams and Ana Espinal were strong around the night for the Tigers.
“We’ll go back in the gym and practice hard for Cumberland,” Tow said. “Cumberland beat us twice during the league season. We have a lot of work to do between now and Monday.”
