Tolman, Shea to meet in Donaldson finals

December 8, 2011

Tolman head coach Mike Kayata and his Tigers will face crosstown rival Shea in the finals of the Donaldson Memorial Tournament.

PAWTUCKET — It will be Tolman and Shea battling for the Donaldson Memorial Tournament championship on Saturday night.
The host Tigers got 35 points from junior guard Juan Velez en route to a 77-51 romp over East Greenwich in the nightcap on Thursday evening.
Shea had earlier posted a 58-50 victory over Toll Gate. Jordy Brito led the Raiders with 22 points, five assists and five steals.
Shea had to battle all night against a tough opponent. The Raiders led 22-20 at halftime and held off the Titans with a strong defensive effort.
Tolman led 37-22 at halftime against East Greenwich, which cut its deficit to 55-46 with 8:13 left in the game. At that point, the Tigers went on a 16-2 run to put the game away.
Junior Jonathan Percy, who played junior varsity ball last season, dominated in the paint for Tolman, scoring 18 points and collecting 11 rebounds. The 6-foot-6 junior altered numerous shots, rejected three, and played with determination on both ends of the floor.
The silky smooth Velez, who once scored 53 points in an AAU game, finished with six assists, five rebounds and seven steals in addition to his 35 points.
“Juan was our shooting guard last year but this year we have moved him to point guard,” Tolman coach Mike Kayata said. “He got a lot of shots tonight!”
The Tigers also received a strong floor game from junior Mamour Samb, who made six steals and grabbed eight rebounds.
“Shea is going to be a tough opponent,” Kayata said, speaking of the Tigers’ rival on Saturday night. “These two teams know each other very well.”
