WAKEFIELD â Tolman starting pitcher Chris Messier issued just one walk in Saturdayâs Region 3 finale of the Division II double-elimination tournament vs. The Prout School. Unfortunately for the sixth-seeded Tigers, that free pass wound up being the deciding factor in a 4-3 loss to the No. 3 Crusaders, thus ending the season for Theo Murrayâs crew.
Tolman had just erased a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the top of the fifth inning before Prout came right back to retake the lead â on a bases loaded walk issued to the Crusadersâ Chris Siravo with two down. The Tigers stranded a runner in scoring position in the sixth before mounting an even greater threat in the seventh. Brandon Gagne continued his hot hitting with a one-out double, but that was followed by two groundball outs to end the contest.
In the fifth the Tigers mounted a two-out rally with Zach Taber getting things started with a double. A walk to Gagne created a first-and-second situation that brought up Andrew Larson, who tripled down the right field line, scoring Taber and Gagne.
âIt just landed fair,â noted Murray.
Carlos Sanabria plated the tying run with a base hit, capping off a furious stretch for Tolman. Brad McParlin, Gagne, Taber each finished with two hits while Gagne allowed two earned runs with one strikeout on the mound. The Tigers finish the postseason with two wins against Narragansett and two one-run losses to Prout, the squad that has lost to Mount St. Charles in each of the last two Division II championship series.
âWe played some good baseball against a very good team,â said Murray. âObviously we donât want to lose, but we feel pretty good. We just came up short.â
