PAWTUCKET — Tolman High overcame a 3-2 deficit with a five-run fifth inning and claimed a 7-3 victory over Ponaganset in a R.I. Division II/Region III losers’ bracket final at Slater Park’s Ted McConnon Memorial Field in Monday afternoon’s off-and-on drizzle.
Sophomore Richie Marshall and junior Carlos Sanabria combined to hurl a five-hitter with four walks and seven strikeouts in the triumph, though the latter earned the win. Offensively, senior Brad McParlin finished 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and a pair of runs scored, while junior Jason Maynard ripped an RBI two-bagger in the second.
Senior Zach Viveiros added an RBI single in the same inning.
As for that opportunistic fifth, senior Zack Taber punched an RBI sacrifice fly, while three other runs scored on a balk, passed ball and wild pitch.
“That frame was ugly, but we’ll take ‘em how ever we get ‘em,” stated skipper Theo Murray.
With the triumph, the Tigers not only improved to 18-5, but also earned the right to travel to Westerly today for a 4 p.m. Region III final. If Tolman wins that tilt, the Bulldogs – who captured a 3-1 verdict over the Pawtucketers on Friday in a winners’ bracket contest – would have to face the Tigers again in a winner-take-all at Slater Park at 4 p.m., Thursday.
