Task force to study municipal shared services

PAWTUCKET — Can municipal public works services such as trash pick-up and recycling, pothole filling, snowplowing, and vehicle repair be done on a regionalized basis to save money? The governor and the top government leaders of Pawtucket, Central Falls and East Providence think so.
On Thursday, Gov. Lincoln Chafee signed an executive order creating a five-member task force to help facilitate the “shared services” concept between Pawtucket, Central Falls and East Providence, beginning in the area of public works operations. He was flanked by Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien, Central Falls state-appointed receiver John McJennett, and East Providence City Manager Peter Graczykowski, all of whom are strong supporters of the idea. Also in attendance were state Rep. Mary Duffy Messier, Gayle Corrigan, chief of staff for the Central Falls receiver, and Pawtucket City Councilors Thomas Hodge, Albert Vitali and Christopher O'Neill.
