SRA earns first-ever varsity win at Lincoln’s expense

May 22, 2012

The St. Raphael boys' volleyball team collected it's first varsity win Tuesday, a 3-1 triumph against Lincoln.

PAWTUCKET — It's been a rough first season for the fledgling St. Raphael Academy program, but Tuesday night made it all worthwhile.
Maybe the number 13 is lucky, after all.
After that amount of losses, the Saints earned its first-ever varsity volleyball triumph with a 3-1 Division II-North decision over Lincoln High at the Alumni & Wellness Center, and the squad commemorated it appropriately.
“You should've seen it in here,” explained head coach April Oberhelman after her club moved to 1-13 overall and in league action. “It was like they had just won the state championship! They charged the floor and hugged each other, patted each other on the back. Geez, even some of the parents charged the floor.
“I knew it was coming, but I didn't know when,” she added with a chuckle. “I'm so happy for these guys. They've worked so hard to get this program off the ground.”
Senior setter and co-captain John Tougas Jr. paced the Saints with 27 assists, four kills and a block, while junior co-captain Brandon Dasilveira chipped in six kills, two aces and a block.
Junior middle blocker Colby Kingsbury added 10 kills and five blocks in the triumph.
