Rogers High hits late basket to oust Shea, 59-56

NEWPORT – Shea High went down fighting in the Division II quarterfinals on Monday night, rallying from a 12-point halftime deficit to lead in the final minute, only to see second-seeded Rogers hit a crucial three-pointer with 12 seconds left that produced a dramatic 59-56 victory over the Raiders.
“I’m extremely proud of these guys,” first-year coach Matt Pita said after they game. “They played hard, as they have all season. We went ahead by one point in the final minute. The game was tied with 37 seconds to go and Rogers worked the ball around for about 25 seconds and then Mark Washington hit a three-pointer with 12 seconds to go.
“We got the last shot,” Pita added. “Eli Itkin had a good look on a three from the corner but it didn’t go in.”
The Raiders got 16 points from point guard Malik Moody and 15 from Itkin. Austin Silva added 12 points and 11 rebounds.
