LINCOLN - Roger S. Sherman, 86, of Woodward Road passed away peacefully Friday, January 24, 2014 at home. He was the devoted husband of his sweetheart, the late Jean C. (Bushee) Sherman for 62 years. A lifelong resident of Lincoln, he was the son of the late E. Sidney and Esther (Foster) Sherman.
Roger was employed by Harris Lumber Company in Providence for 47 years. He began his career as a sales clerk and worked his way up to Vice President and General Manager. He was the Director of the Northeast Retail Lumberman's Association (1978-1980) and was a member of the Board of Directors of the R.I. Builders Association (1986-1989). He was a member of the Providence Rotary Club.
As a young man, he was a volunteer firefighter for the Lime Rock Fire District. For 17 years, he was a member and former chairperson of the Lime Rock Board of Fire Wardens. He was a member of Mount Moriah Lodge #8, F. & A.M., Lincoln.
Roger was a lifelong Episcopalian and a parishioner of the Cathedral of St. John, Providence for over 80 years. In recent years, he joined Christ Church, Lincoln, where he felt at home.
Roger enjoyed woodworking, boating, gardening, logging and spending time with his family. He was a kind, thoughtful and giving man who always thought of the needs of others first.
He is survived by his three children, Donald R. Sherman of Northfield, MA, Robin S. Monica and her husband, Stephen of North Kingstown and Dawn L. Sherman of Lincoln; one sister, Jean S. King of East Providence; two brothers, Edwin C. Sherman of Greenville and Franklin F. Sherman of Lincoln; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the grandfather of the late Jeffrey S. Monica.
His Requiem Eucharist will be held THURSDAY, JANUARY 30 at 11 A.M. in Christ Church, 1643 Lonsdale Avenue, Lincoln. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston.
