Robert M. Thomas
EAST PROVIDENCE - Robert M. Thomas, 95, of East Providence died Tuesday at the Philip Hulitar Center. He was the husband of the late Jean (Gordon) Thomas. They were married for 60 years.
Born in St. Louis, MO, the son of the late Rev. Albert C. Thomas and Minnie(Mansfield) Thomas, he lived in Rumford for over 60 years. He graduated from Durfee High School in Fall River in 1933, Moses Brown School in 1934, and Brown University in 1938.
He served in the Army in the ETO during WWII for 5 years. He was an insurance underwriting executive of the AMICA Insurance Company for 35 years. He was also a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, the Yankee Trailers Hiking Club, the Newman YMCA, and the First Baptist Church in America. He was a Boy Scout leader and enjoyed hiking, mountain climbing, many elder hostels, traveling, swimming, and baseball. After retiring in 1981, he finished climbing all of New England's 4000 ft. mountains and traveling to all of the 50 states.
He is survived by his son, Gordon Thomas and his wife Deborah (Allen) Thomas, of Princeton, NJ, his daughter, Patience Thomas of Famingdale, Maine, his daughter-in-law Melodie (Ryan) Thomas of North Kingstown, his son, Bruce Thomas and his wife Roxana (Lemos) Thomas of Pawtucket, his sister Sylvia (Thomas) Keown of Huntington, WV, six grandchildren, Allen Mansfield Thomas, Dawn Thomas-Smith, Stasia Jean Crotzer, Chellie Thomas, Julee (Thomas) Boland, Jen Thomas, and two great-granddaughters, Ashlyn and Kayla Smith. Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his son,Judson Thomas, his step-mother, Loretta (Barner) Thomas, and his brothers Avery Thomas and Chester Thomas.
A memorial service will be held at 1 o'clock, Saturday March 5, at the First Baptist Church in America, Providence. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice or to the Meeting House Restoration Fund of the First Baptist Church in America, 75 North Main St, Providence, RI 02903.
