During a tour of the "Rhode Island Votes" exhbit at the RI State Archives located at 337 Wesminister Street in Providence, RI on Tuesday afternoon, November 23, 2010, this is a Shoup Lever Voting Machine which was used to vote in Rhode Island from 1936 to the 1990's, until the state went to paper ballots and optical scanners in 1998. The Shoup Machine has a panel of levers that represent the choices available to voters. To cast a vote, a voter simply pulls the lever for the candidate or issue of their choosing.
