PAWTUCKET—A puppy, locked inside a filthy pet carrier, was found inside a dumpster near the intersection of Harrison Street and West Avenue on Thursday morning.

Animal Control Director John Holmes said the puppy was found at around 7:35 a.m. by some passersby who heard the animal crying and called police. The 9-to 10-week-old male had been left inside a carrier that was loaded with feces and thrown into the dumpster, he added.

Holmes said that Pawtucket Police are conducting an investigation, but currently have no suspects. “They are trying to find out who did this, and if they do, that person will certainly be charged to the fullest extent of the law,” Holmes added.

Holmes said the puppy, a Jack Russell terrier mixed breed, has been checked out and appears to be healthy. He said the puppy will be held at the Pawtucket Animal Shelter for the time being, while the police investigation is being conducted.

Anyone interested in adopting the puppy is welcome to come by the Pawtucket Animal Shelter in Slater Park to see him. Applications are being accepted for potential owners. “For someone looking for a puppy, this is a little sweetheart,” Holmes noted.
