Police make arrest in fatal shooting

July 11, 2012

PAWTUCKET (AP) — Pawtucket police have made one arrest and are looking for a second suspect in the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old man outside a local elementary school.
Eighteen-year-old Givanni Lima was arraigned Monday on a conspiracy charge. Police say the Tolman High School senior drove 19-year-old Darrell Johnson away from the scene after Johnson shot Joshua Burgo in the chest Friday.
Burgo was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital.
Prosecutor Raymond Johnson Jr. says the victim and the teens were part of a group that had gathered to watch a fight between two girls behind the Nathanael Greene Elementary School early Friday morning. Lima is being held on a $100,000 bond.
According to police reports, Burgo was found lying in the parking lot in back of the 285 Smithfield Avenue school with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Burgo, who was from the Broadway section of the city, was reportedly with a group of people gathered behind Pawtucket Fire Station 5 when he was shot.
Police says some of those people stayed with Burgo after he was shot.
Those shots were heard by firefighters who were just returning from a call. A firefighter at the scene attempted to resuscitate Burgo using CPR, but he never regained consciousness.
After an investigation sufficient probable cause was gathered which resulted in the issuance of the warrant.
Anyone with information regarding Johnson's whereabouts is asked to contact the Pawtucket Police Department at (401) 727-9100.
Burgo's murder is the second homicide in the city this year and the shooting is the second in the city over the past month.
The city's first homicide occurred in January when 28-year-old Pawtucket man, Richard C. Cruz, was found stabbed on the sidewalk, at the intersection of Main and School Streets — near the old Apex building.
Cruz was found unconscious and suffering from several stab wounds.
Cruz was rushed to Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Cruz was rushed to Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Last month, Pawtucket police said a man was shot in the leg while standing in front of a home. The 29 year-old man from Central Falls was shot in the right leg in front of 48 Woodlawn Street at about 8:10 p.m. He was with several other people in the driveway when he was hit.
The injury was not considered life-threatening and he was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence for treatment.
