PROVIDENCE - Pedro M. Cano, 92, passed on January 14th at home with his family by his side. He was the husband of Carlina Cano.
Born in Bolivar Antioquia, Colombia, a son of the late Antonio and Adelina (Sanchez) Cano.
He had been employed as a Chief Mechanic over 70 years in the Textile Industry before retiring. He was the first Colombian immigrant to Central Falls in 1964 and recruited other workers from Colombia to the Blackstone Valley area. He has received many awards and citation from numerous congressional and regional officials. Mayor David Cicilline declared August 19th the Pedro M. Cano Day in the City of Providence. He was an avid reader and storyteller, the movie "Telares" is a documentary that was made of his life in the textile industry.
Besides his wife Carlina, he is survived by 7 daughters, Marina Alvarez and Alba Luz Hinestroza, both of Colombia, Olga Isaza and Martha Cano both of Pawtucket, Amparo Villanueva of North Providence, Margarita Cano of Central Falls and Anna Cano-Morales of North Providence, 4 sons, Rodrigo Cano of Colombia, Humberto Cano of Pawtucket, Juan G. Cano and Luis Cano, both of Central Falls, a brother, Luis Cano of Colombia, 32 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and a great-great grandson. He was the father of the late Pedro Cano Jr, Orlando Cano, Fernando Cana and Maria Elena Cana.
His funeral will be held Thursday at 8:30am from the Keefe Funeral Home, Five Higginson Ave, Lincoln with a Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Spirit Parish, Dexter St, Central Falls at 10am. Relatives and friends are invited, calling hours will be held Wednesday from 4 to 8pm.
