PROVIDENCE – After watching his team dismantle Georgetown for its Big East win the season, PC head coach Ed Cooley touched upon the ominous cloud that has hovered over his program in recent weeks.
From a three-game losing streak that included a pair of stinging overtime defeats and a 30-point blowout against Villanova, to Brandon Austin’s decision to leave without playing a single regular-season minute, to a fire at Cooley’s East Greenwich home that forced his family to evacuate, the head coach saw an opening to address all concerns following the Friars’ 70-52 bludgeoning of the Hoyas.
“One the things I talked to the team about was perspective on life. All the turbulence that we’ve had around our program over the last couple of months, and to get a call from your wife (Nurys) that something at home is not right, it really puts things in perspective,” he said. “We all want to win. I feel the frustration from our fans, our season ticket holders, our donors, but I embrace that frustration because that means they care.
“At the end of the day, we are going to be okay. It’s not easy when you’re building a program, it’s not easy at all,” Cooley continued. “Your expectations are the beginning of the year, sometimes your goals have to change, but if we continue to do the right thing daily and do the right thing institutionally, our program will flourish.
“We’ll have some bumps and some turbulence, but the plane always lands,” Cooley remarked with a smile. “I’m proud to be at Providence College. I never see myself going anywhere. I have absolute 100 percent support of our administration and today it all came together for us.”
Nurys Cooley sat in the back of the media room inside the Dunkin’ Donuts Center as Cooley talked more about what he and his family dealt with on Tuesday.
“I am married to the greatest woman in the country. She handles all of that, she really does,” said Cooley. “Honestly, I’m the assistant coach in my house. I do what she says.
“Mentally it bothered me, but when I was able to explain to our team perspective, that settled me down,” said Cooley.
Once Ed Cooley was done addressing the media, laughter could be heard. Given what was just said, it wasn’t a surprise to see Nurys chuckle at her husband’s remarks.
