Pawtucket sounds the call for additional snow shoveling volunteers to help dig out seniors

February 21, 2014

PAWTUCKET — With more snow, such as has been the case this winter, comes more requests for shoveling assistance for the city’s elderly residents. Hoping to boost volunteer participation in a program that works to shovel sidewalks for seniors, Mayor Donald Grebien held a press conference on Friday to enlist more volunteers.

Grebien praised the Youth to Senior Assistance Program, which he launched three years ago, for serving many of the seniors at no cost. However, he said the need is at its greatest level yet with this harsher than normal winter season. “Last year, we only had a few snowstorms, but this year, we’ve had more requests. There are a lot of seniors who can’ shovel for themselves,” he said.
