PAWTUCKET — The defending Governors’ Cup Champion Pawtucket Red Sox will play their 2013 home-opener at McCoy Stadium on Thursday, April 11 against the Rochester Red Wings at 7:05 p.m.
The PawSox 2013 season will actually start one week earlier on April 4th when they play the inaugural game at the newly-renovated PNC Field in Moosic, PA against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The PawSox and Yankees will play a 4-game series from April 4-7 in a rematch of last year’s International League semifinal playoff round won by the PawSox. Pawtucket will then move to Lehigh Valley for a 3-game set from April 8-10 before making their 2013 McCoy Stadium debut on April 11th.
Pawtucket’s home-opener will begin with a celebration of the 2012 Governors’ Cup team as PawSox players will receive their championship rings as part of special pre-game ceremonies.
The initial homestand will feature several special events to honor the first PawSox team to win the Governors’ Cup in 28 years.
Pawtucket’s eight-game homestand runs from April 11-18 and includes a 4-game series vs. Rochester followed by a 4-game set vs. Lehigh Valley. The series vs. the IronPigs will be highlighted by a pair of weekday matinee games at McCoy during school vacation week on Tuesday, April 16 and Thursday, April 18 both at 12:05 pm.
The PawSox will once again play a 144-game International League schedule with the usual 72 games at home and 72 on the road. (Last year the Sox had 76 home games and 68 on the road because they hosted Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for an extra 4-game set that was moved to McCoy while the Yankees’ ballpark was undergoing an extensive renovation all season).
The PawSox will play 16 games against each of their five International League North rivals - 8 home & 8 away. The PawSox will again play 8 games against each of the other eight IL clubs from the West & South Divisions (4 home & 4 away).
All 14 International League teams are back in the same divisional set-up as last year. However, the Buffalo Bisons of the IL North have switched Major League affiliations and are now with the Toronto Blue Jays instead of the New York Mets. The Pawtucket Red Sox and the Boston Red Sox own the longest affiliation relationship (since 1973) in all of the IL.
Pawtucket’s home schedule consists of 54 night games and 18 day games with the following breakdown by month: April (12), May (13), June (17), July (13), August (17), and September (0).
All PawSox home night games through early-May will begin at 6:15 p.m. with the exception of Opening Night and the following evening (April 11 & 12 both at 7:05 p.m.).
Pawtucket will commence with regular 7:05 p.m. weeknight starts on May 14 and play virtually all of their weeknight home games at 7:05 pm for the remainder of the season. The PawSox will play each of their Saturday night home games one hour earlier than weeknights beginning at 6:05 p.m. Sunday games will remain at 1:05 p.m. with the exception of August 25 at 6:05 p.m. May 31, July 1, 2, and 3, and August 30 will all start at 6:15 pm with fireworks to follow each of those games.
Pawtucket will play six weekday home matinees on April 16, April 18, April 30, May 21, July 31, and August 14 – all beginning at 12:05 p.m.
The Sox will conclude their home schedule on Saturday, August 31 vs. Syracuse at 6:05 p.m. at McCoy before ending the regular-season on Labor Day (September 2) in Lehigh Valley.
Four teams will again qualify for the International League playoffs that begin on September 4 – the three division winners and one wild card (the second-place team with the best record). The Governors’ Cup Finals will be played from September 10-14 while the Triple-A National Championship Game between the I.L. Champ and the PCL Champ will be staged on September 17 in Lehigh Valley.
