PAWTUCKET – One down, five to go.
Seeking to claim the franchise’s first Governor’s Cup championship in 28 years, the Pawtucket Red Sox grabbed Game One of the best-of-five opening-round series against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 7-4. The PawSox fell behind 4-0 after 2½ innings before compiling seven unanswered runs to end the contest, which was witnessed by 1,518.
Seeking to rebound after last week’s disastrous debut with the Boston Red Sox, Zach Stewart didn’t fare much better in his turn Wednesday. The righty was victimized for two home runs in the third inning as the Junior Yankees sprinted out to an early lead.
Pawtucket’s offense was able to bail out its starting pitcher. The home team put up a three-spot in the third inning, doing so courtesy of the long ball. J.C. Linares put the PawSox on the scoreboard with a two-run poke with Andy LaRoche following suit two batters later with a solo shot.
Stewart delivered a scoreless fourth and fifth, which proved to be his final frame. Once again, Pawtucket’s bats provided a big-time lift as LaRoche connected for a two-run double in the last of the fifth. The hit – which put Pawtucket up for good – enabled Stewart to pick up the win.
Pawtucket’s bullpen did the job as three relievers combined to toss four innings of scoreless ball. Alex Wilson struck out three in two innings before Pedro Beato came on to deliver 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts.
Beato departed with one down in the ninth and runners on second and third, but Jose De La Torre halted Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s bid by retiring two straight hitters via strikeout en route to registering the save.
Bryce Brentz provided the PawSox with some insurance in the last of the eighth, the prospect blasting his first Triple-A home run, a two-run shot that made it a three-run game.
EXTRA BASES: The PawSox activated reliever Will Inman following the conclusion of Monday’s game after Chris Carpenter was called up to Boston. Inman has been on the disabled list since August 21 with a right thumb injury. ... In order to make room for Chris Hernandez, who will start Game Two, the PawSox transferred righty Mike MacDonald to Double-A Portland. … Outfielder Ronald Bermudez and catcher Matt Spring were spotted in Pawtucket’s clubhouse Wednesday.
