CUMBERLAND – A 16-year-old local girl who was last seen on June 3 remained missing Tuesday as police continued to seek information on her possible whereabouts in Florida or California.
Margaret Weece, 16, left town in a white Chevrolet Cobalt on a possible trip to see relatives in California or Florida, police said. The vehicle has since been recovered in Maryland, police confirmed.
It remains unclear whether Weece is travelling with friends or alone but police said she is not believed to be endangered at this time.
The teen lives with her father and stepmother, Dustin and Mary Weece, in Cumberland but may have gone to see her mother, Ruth Weece, in California, police said on Tuesday. The teenager was reported to have left her home on a trip on a previous occasion in the past, police officers familiar with the case said.
Her mother has posted a message on Facebook asking for help in locating her daughter.
“Please help find my daughter, she went missing from her Rhode Island home,” a posting on Ruth Weece’s site stated.
“It is unclear if she is with friends or travelling alone. She is only 16 and can be either headed to California or Florida as she has family in both those states,” her mother said.
Lt. William Wilkie said the missing person report was filed with the National Criminal Information Center as a nationwide notification to police departments for any information on Margaret.
Anyone with information on Margaret Weece can contact the Cumberland Police at 333-2500.
