PAWTUCKET â€” Both young and old visitors to the Looff Carousel in Slater Park will no doubt enjoy seeing the big model of a U.S. Navy ship that is currently on display. What many don't realize is the important part that this boat played in U.S. history as well as the way it helped lift a Pawtucket resident out of his post-retirement doldrums.
A scale model of the USS Wasp CVS-18, an aircraft carrier with a long and distinguished history in eras of both war and peace, will be on exhibit in the carousel building from now through Oct. 1. The model was painstakingly built by Robert H. Miniati, who served for seven years on the Wasp during a 20-year career in the U.S. Navy.
