After this Thursday night, no one will be allowed to wear the No. 3 jersey for the New London (Conn.) High boysâ basketball any more.
Prior to the Whalersâ 7 p.m. home contest against Hamden High, the program will retire Kris Dunnâs number. Dunn earned McDonaldâs All-American honors as a senior at New London High before coming to Providence College in the fall of 2012.
âAt New London, we have two policies. We have a jersey retirement and a number retirement,â explained Craig Parker, head coach at New London High. âA jersey retirement implies that you can retire a jersey but someone can wear that number. Weâre actually doing a number retirement for Kris. No one will wear his number again.â
Back in December, Parker mentioned the idea of properly honoring Dunnâs contributions to New London basketball. At the time, the only detail left to iron out was to find a convenient date for the PC sophomore to come down. With the Friars in the area leading up to Saturdayâs crucial game at the Dunkinâ Donuts Center against DePaul, this week seemed as good a time as any to set everything in stone.
