Mary Smith McGrath
PAWTUCKET - Mary Smith McGrath of Pawtucket, a teacher and coordinator of homebound students for 62 years, died on Friday, April 1, 2011. Mary was the wife of the late Francis D. McGrath Jr., whom she was married to for 52 years.
Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late John P. and Mary (Donahue) Smith. Mary lived in Pawtucket her entire life.
Mary graduated from the former R.I. College of Education and also received a Masters Degree in Education from R.I. College. She was employed by the Pawtucket School Department for 62 years as a teacher. Mary was Coordinator of the Homebound Program, teaching students in their homes, while also enriching their lives with her compassionate personality. At retirement in December 2010, Mary was honored by the Pawtucket School Department for her years of dedicated service.
She was a member of Kappa Delta Phi Honor Society, Whoâ€™s Who in American Colleges and Universities, and a 50 year member of Pawtucket Country Club. Mary was also past president of the Pawtucket Teachers Credit Union.
Mary and her beloved husband Frank traveled the world throughout the years. She especially enjoyed the culture of China and the Far East. Mary also spoke fondly of travel to Africa, where she and Frank went on a safari.
As a member of the extended Riley family and a life long friend of the Bigos family, Mary's kind and friendly nature will be dearly missed. All of Mary's many loving friends will always remember her constant smile and thoughtful gestures.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial for Mary to which relatives and friends are invited, Tuesday, April 5, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Walcott Street, Pawtucket.
