Maria Ferreira

CUMBERLAND - Maria "Carmita" Ferreira, was the beloved and devoted mother of 14 children. She was born in Esmolfe, Portugal on August 21, 1926. She was the loving daughter of the late Joao and Micas Loureiro. She was the oldest of 13 children. She immigrated to the United States in 1953 in search of a better life for her children but her heart longed for her Esmolfe and she never stopped pining for her parents and family that she left behind. She was the devoted wife of the late Francisco Ferreira. She leaves 14 children and their families for whom she sacrificed her life, and in doing so, lived her faith each day: John (Elaine), Christine, Cezar (Mary), Joe (Reenie), George, Rosemary (Tom), Tony (Mary), Jack (Jacki), Elizabeth, Ricky, Violet (Victor), Rachel, Laura, and Suzanne. She leaves 21 grandchildren and their families: Tony (Regina), David (Cheryl), Billy (Maite), Chrissy (John), Jay, Carie (Eugene), Michael (Heather), Shirley (Duke), George, Christopher (Alexandra), Michelle, Catherine, Kimberly (Rob), Andrew, Erik, Marc, Samantha, Alexandria, Jonathan, Rachel, and Kaleigh. She also leaves 23 great-grandchildren and their families as well as 3 great-great grandchildren. She leaves 7 loving siblings: Raquel, Violetina, Antonio, Alice, Jorge, Joao, and Joaquim. She was also the loving sister of the late Zezito, Cesar, Ana, Christina, and Antonio. She leaves several sisters- and brothers-in-law. She leaves many nieces and nephews as well as many cousins. She also leaves many special life-long friends including Micki and Sr. Eduarda.
She lived a simple life calling upon Jesus and Mary to help her through each day while she cared selflessly and tirelessly for her children and their families - no matter what the cost was to her. She was always there to help care for her grandchildren and to make each one feel special. She made Sunday dinners for the entire family. She could take the simplest of ingredients and turn them into the most delicious meals. Our family gathered in the house we grew up in, our safe haven, Sunday after Sunday and, there, we became a strong family supported by her unconditional love. She taught us to be our brother's keeper and she showed us how. She leaves us all with broken hearts and a hole that will never be filled.
We want to thank her doctors - Dr. Eller, Dr. Karczmar, and Dr. Lambrecht - for their gentle care for many years. We want to thank Father Cabral for his prayers and visits to the hospital. We want to thank Father Dennis Kieton for his pastoral care of our precious mother and our sisters that lived with her - for his many blessings that helped us all through many critical times and for bringing her Holy Communion during the last 15 years. We thank our sisters, Christine, Elizabeth, Rachel, Laura, and Suzanne, for being there each and every day to care for her at home. We would like to thank our brothers, George and Jack, for always being there for her. We thank our oldest brother, John, who was at her side from the beginning during the especially hard times - something our mother never forgot. Most especially, we want to thank our loving God for giving us the gift of our Mother.
Mae, no mother was ever more loved - you leave us all with broken hearts but with the great hope that you are now in Heaven with Nossa Senhora that fortified you all these years and with os Avos and with tio Zezito, tio Cesar, and tia Ana and with Pai. We love you, Mae, for all eternity and we know that nothing can separate us. We will always keep your gentle smile and your sweet laughter close in our hearts. Sweet Jesus, be with our Mother.
A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday at 10 AM from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122 Cumberland. Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Fatima Drive, Cumberland. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting Hours will be held Monday from 4-8 PM.
