February 19, 2014

PAWTUCKET—An intoxicated man accused a Pawtucket Police officer of striking him with his cruiser outside of a Walgreens pharmacy early Monday evening and then threatened a group of witnesses at knifepoint who sided with the officer, Pawtucket Police said.
The incident occurred outside the Walgreens at 100 Broad Street at around 5:10 p.m.. According to Major Arthur Martins, Officer Michael Costigan was backing up his cruiser when Olaes Becote, who was standing nearby, ran up and banged the back of the vehicle's trunk with his hand. He reportedly fell to the ground and started yelling that the officer had hit him.
Costigan said that the incident was witnessed by five or six other people, all of whom stated that they saw Becote strike the cruiser. Becote had demanded that a rescue be called, and while they were waiting for it to arrive, Costigan said numerous people came up to him and spoke about seeing Becote hit the vehicle with his own hand.
Costigan said that Becote, who was lying on the ground, became upset by the remarks. He reportedly jumped up, pulled a folding knife from his pocket and waved it at the witnesses, threatening them with harm. Costigan was able to grab Becote's arm and remove the knife, and he was transported to the Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island for a medical evaluation, Martins said.
While at the emergency room, Becote, who police say appeared intoxicated, caused another disruption and lashed out at police officers and medical personnel there, Martins said. He was subsequently arrested.
Becote, 56, of 2012 Noose Neck Rd., Coventry, was charged with fighting, weapons other than firearms prohibited, two counts of felony assault on a police officer, assault of health care providers, and two counts of resisting arrest, Martins said. He was arraigned on Tuesday with bail set at $10,000 with surety, and was then sent to Superior Court, where he was scheduled to appear as a previous violator.
