PAWTUCKET — A 20-year-old city man suspected of firing shots outside Tommy's Lounge early Friday morning was apprehended by police after being found with an allegedly stolen gun in his pants pocket about a half hour later.
According to Police Maj. Arthur Martins, police received a report that a man had fired shots near the bar on India Street at around 12:30 a.m. and then fled from the area. Police found several shell casings at the scene.
A short time later, Martins said that Patrol Officer William Figuera saw a man matching the description of the suspect on Denver Street. He ran after the man, chased him and tackled him, Martins said. Police also found a gun in the suspect's pants. The gun was determined to have been stolen.
The suspect, identified as Jurami Batista, of Prospect Heights, was taken into custody. However, once at the police station, he lashed out and fought with the detectives who were interviewing him, Martins said.
Batista was arraigned Friday in District Court, Providence, on charges of receiving stolen goods (the gun), carrying a firearm without a license, firing in a compact area, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, four counts of assault on a police officer, and possession of marijuana, Martins said.
