PAWTUCKET— An unsightly and long-neglected stretch of busy North Main Street, near an underground bowling alley and former Sears department store, will get a much-needed lift with a proposal to build a new LA Fitness Center.
The proposal by Nms Associates LLC, part of the Procaccanti Group real estate management and investment firms, will involve an expanse of property that stretches down North Main Street from Ann Mary Street in Pawtucket to the corner of the old Sears store at White Avenue in neighboring Providence.
According to Pawtucket Planning Director Barney Heath, the LA Fitness facility will be built entirely on the Pawtucket side of the property, on the site that now contains a decades-old underground bowling alley. The Sears store, located over the city line in Providence, will be demolished to make way for a 300-space parking lot to service the health club. As such, the property owner will be paying property taxes on the building to Pawtucket and the taxes on the parking lot to Providence, Heath said.
“We're very excited about this,” said Heath, noting how much the improvement will mean to the blighted area. He also said that city officials are pleased to have the building on the Pawtucket side because it has more real estate value than the parking lot.
According to the proposed plans, the fitness center will be a two-story, 45,000-square foot facility that will face the parking lot, with the rear side to Ann Mary Street. The front entrance will be on the parking lot side. An expanse of large windows will run along the side of the building that faces North Main Street and the parking lot will be landscaped with trees and shrubs. Read the full story in Tuesday's Times.
