Judge Robert J. Rahil
NORTH PROVIDENCE - District Court Judge Robert J. Rahill, of North Providence and formerly of South Kingstown passed on January 27, 2012 surrounded by his loving family.
He was the husband of Mary Elaine (Leonard) Rahill for 56 years.
Judge Rahill was born in Queens, New York, the son of James and Mary (Kerrins) Rahill. After obtaining his B. Ed. degree ('54) and his M. Ed. degree ('63) from Rhode Island College, he continued his Graduate Studies at Rhode Island College, University of Vermont and Suffolk University Law School, where he received his J.D. in 1977.
While completing his education, Judge Rahill also proudly served his country first in the USAF Special Operations School and then later in the USAF Air Command and Staff College before retiring as a Lt. Colonel in the Rhode Island Air National Guard.
Some of Judge Rahill's many accomplishments in life were receiving his Wings and Commission from the USAF and was both a teacher and department head at the Barrington High School, appointed by Governor Frank Licht as the Rhode Island Registrar of Motor Vehicles and a member of the American Association of Motor Vehicles Administrators, appointed as Executive Secretary of the State Advisory Council on Vocational Technical Education. He was appointed by Governor Noel as the Director of the State Department of Transportation. He was appointed by Governor Garrahy as his Executive Assistant for Policy in charge of Evaluations and Recommendations for Policy Operations.
He left the government to begin the practice of law. He opened his own practice with offices in Pawtucket, Warwick and South Kingstown.
He was appointed to the District Court Bench by Governor Sundlun and confirmed by the State Senate and served in the District Court until 2009.
Judge Rahill's memberships have included Rhode Island Bar Association, Massachusetts Bar, Federal Bar of Rhode Island, was admitted to MENSA in 1997 and awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 1980.
Besides his wife, Judge Rahill is survived by his four children, Robert J. Rahill, Esq. of South Kingstown, Thomas M. Rahill and his wife Lauren of Orlando, FL, Mary Tomlinson and her husband David of South Kingstown and Catherine Rahill of North Providence, his six grandchildren, Katie and Krystie Tomlinson, Thomas and Erin Rahill, Danisha, Markia and Elaina Furtado-Rahill.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 9:30 AM from the MANNING - HEFFERN FUNERAL HOME, 68 Broadway, Pawtucket with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph's Church, Walcott Street, Pawtucket at 11:00AM to which relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter, RI. Calling hours are Wednesday, 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the funeral home.
