Joseph M. Larence
CUMBERLAND - Joseph M. 'Pete' Larence, 96, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Mt. St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland. He was the beloved husband of the late Alice (Gobeil) Larence for 59 years. He was born in Central Falls, the son of the late Ernest and Alida (Laliberte) Larence and he was a lifelong resident of the Blackstone Valley.
Pete and Alice were the owner operators of Pete's Variety in Central Falls for many years until retiring in 1978. He was a member of the former Notre Dame Church where he was a dedicated altar server. He held many offices in the St. Vincent DePaul Society and was an active member of Notre Dame Senior Citizens. He was a proud veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in the 34th Infantry Division in Italy. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He was a member of the Franco-American War Veterans. Pete was an avid bowler competing in many duckpin leagues in the area.
He leaves his son Roger (Nancy) Larence of Northbridge, MA; his daughter Cecile (Robert) Letourneau of Cumberland, five grandchildren Jeffrey Larence, Douglas Larence, Alexander Lapierre, Ciara Larence, Kevin Letourneau, and Jocelyn Therien and 5 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Germaine Bellevance, Beatrice Bachand, and Raymond, Hector, Wilfrid, and Arthur Larence.
His funeral will be held from the Darlington Mortuary, 1042 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Chapel of Mt. St. Rita Health Centre, 15 Sumner Brown Road, Cumberland at 11:00 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery, Daggett Avenue, Pawtucket. Calling hours in the funeral home on Friday, October 25, 2013 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.
