Joseph L. Smith
CUMBERLAND - Joseph L. Smith, 88, of Ronald Ave. died Sunday in the Mt. St. Rita Health Center, Cumberland. He was the beloved husband of Sheila (Brannigan) Smith.
Born in Cumberland he was the son of the late Fred and Emma (Brown) Smith. He was a lifelong Cumberland resident.
Mr. Smith was a 20 year U. S. Air Force retiree serving during WW II; he had also served during the Korean Conflict retiring as a Master Sergeant. After retirement from the Air Force Mr. Smith began a 20 plus year service with the Cumberland Water Department retiring in 1988.
He was a communicant and Eucharistic minister at St. John Vianney Church, Cumberland.
Besides his wife he leaves five loving daughters, Sheila Daniels of Cumberland, Mary Michael of Cranston, Christina Warner of Wakefield, Ann Daggett of Gig Harbor, WA and Monica Smith of Groton, CT. He also leaves four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A celebration of his life with military honors will be held Thursday 10 a.m. from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Rd. Rt. 122, Cumberland. Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. John Vianney Church, 3609 Diamond Hill Rd., Cumberland. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
