Jose A. Lopes
CENTRAL FALLS - Jose A. Lopes, 65, of Walnut St. died Thursday in the Memorial Hospital, Pawtucket. He was the beloved husband of Maria Ester (Costa) Lopes.
Born in Santa Comba de Villa Nova de Foz Coa, Beira Alta, Portugal he was the son of the late Manuel J. and Guilhermina J. (Cruz) Lopes. He came to this country in 1973 and had lived in Cumberland settling in Central Falls.
He was a custodian employed by the Central Falls School Department for the past 6 years. He was previously employed by the Slater Co., Pawtucket for 12 years and the former Standard Nut and Bolt Co., Cumberland for 19 years.
Mr. Lopes was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church, and a member of the Clube Juventude Lusitana, Cumberland. He was also an avid fisherman, accomplished gardener, a talented winemaker, and a Benfica fan. He was everyone's best friend, quick with a smile and helping hand.
Besides his wife he leaves two daughters, Elizabeth Lopes-Costa and her husband Paulo A. Costa of Central Falls and Kathleen Neves and her husband Sergio D. Neves of Cumberland. One sister, M. Candida Albuquerque and a brother Antero S. Lopes both of Portugal. He was also the brother of the late Antonio Lopes.
A celebration of his life will be held Monday at 9 a.m. from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Rd. Rte. 122, Cumberland. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Fatima Dr., Cumberland. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
