SOMERSET, MA- John N. Furtado "Coach Jack Furtado", 73, of Somerset passed away on Wednesday February 8, 2012 at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston. He was the husband of forty-eight years to Marjorie (Audette) Furtado.
John was born in Fall River the son of the late John S. and Josephine (Simons) Furtado.
He was a graduate of Somerset High School class of 1957. Jack was inducted into the Somerset High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He also graduated from the former Bradford Durfee Tech class of 1961 and Bridgewater State College earning his teaching degree. Mr. Furtado taught in the special education classroom for over thirty years at the Joseph Case High School in Swansea. While teaching at Case Jack was passionately involved with coaching. Jack coached the football, baseball and girls softball teams. During his tenure as coach at Case he was the assistant football coach on the 1990 State Championship team at Foxboro Stadium and the Head Coach of 2001 Girls Softball State Championship team. Mr Furtado was the Athletic Director at Case for many years and retired from Case in 1997. After his retirement he coached the baseball team at Coyle Cassidy for several years and also coached the American Legion Team in Swansea. Jack also was a baseball umpire locally for many years.
He enjoyed the time and memories he shared with family and friends over the years. Jack also had a true passion for being on or around the gridiron and baseball diamond.
Survivors besides his wife are two sons: John N. Furtado Jr. and his wife Deborah of Swansea, MA; Mark D. Furtado and his wife Monique of North Attleboro, MA; three loving grandchildren: Jack, Maxwell and Ava Rose along with several nieces and nephews.
His funeral service will be held on Friday at 9am from the HATHAWAY COMMUNITY HOME for FUNERALS, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10am in Saint Francis of Assisi Church 530 Gardners Neck Road, Swansea.
